April 23rd?

How would the morning of April 23rd work? The reason I am wondering is this. Kathy and I were discussing what will happen with the kids and the classrooms the morning of NC's. Rooms will need to be being set up, and she and I will be nervous wrecks--you probably don't want to talk to us that day (just kidding!) Last time we hosted, which Mrs. Hudziak was a part of, the kids went home early. We are now facing a Friday with way too much going on for staff setting up. Think about it, unless Thursdays are sacred to Earth Day somehow. Or, could that be a garden clean-up day or some group activity? Just wondering. Thanks.

  1. Here are the problems I see with April 23rd:
We will need as many staff as possible working with the students on the planned Earth Day activities.
NCs will tend to pull staff attention and efforts away from any other activities around that time.
If we plan Earth Day activities as filler, students may take the event less seriously.

Regarding garden cleanup day: A separate activity is already on the calendar for garden cleanup. The goal of Earth Day is about raising awareness about the natural environment. It started with teach-ins about human impact on our planet's ecosystems. There are other activities being discussed that may better accomplish that goal.

Why Thursday? Thursday, April 22nd 2010 is the 40th anniversary of the first Earth Day initiated by Wisconsin's own Senator Gaylord Nelson. That's why it is a good first choice. If not April 22nd, then I prefer to accomodate our music therapist. She is available on Thursdays. Tuesdays are possible but her schedule on Tuesday is less flexible. Please see the above post about why I think the activity with the music therapist is important.

  2. Karen, John has reassured me that from Lunch till 2:30pm would be enough time to set up the rooms for forensics. After lunch the kids can go into the auditorium and watch a movie.(or maybe we have the pep assembly that day for NC’s then. ) I don’t want to do Earth day activities that day.

  3. I undersstand, it would make it busy in other ways; it was just a thought. For my part, I understand why they sent the kids home early last time. I'd still be for any activity that would be different than class that day, but that's just me.

    Thanks.
